The new Elkins K-2 Elementary occupies a 7-acre site immediately to the north of their existing elementary school.. Initially and while in the Pre-Design Phase, MBL was impressed by the schools possible realtionship to its natural surroundings.

The 38,000 sq. ft. school, by design, is organized with the administrative and multi-purpose zones toward the highway portion of the site while the classroom wings are allowed to extend toward the river and up to the mountains. The learning resource center's view and large windows focus one on the the mountains and river beyond. The east wall of the main corridor undulates, making reference to the nearby river.

The main entry is flanked by a colonade of "tree-like" columns supporting the canopy that leads to this whimisically yellow accented grand entry tower. Once inside, the school's color, purple, accents the corridors and is highlighted by a vertical ribbon wall and high ceilings.
