Cheer Office Building

CLIENT: WALMART

TIME PERIOD: 2018-2024

ROLE: ARCHITECT

The Cheer Office Building will be the new home for the Apparel Merchandising Departments of Walmart. Located in the Northwest Quad of the Campus Master Plan, this building is a hybrid of the New Layout Center in program and the new typical office buildings in aesthetics, allowing for a visual and experiential feel of being on the campus but providing functions related to the Layout Center needs.

This building will house up to 600 merchants, clustered in work groups with their respective apparel pads adjacent to their workplace. Product development pods and meeting spaces will be near their work groups as well as dedicated meeting rooms and a pair of Virtual Labs.

The floor plate for this building is incredibly large at roughly 77,500 square feet per floor and will be difficult to provide the same associate experience as other associates will have in the dedicated office buildings which have a smaller floor plate. The proposed response includes vision glazing around the entire perimeter of this building to allow as much daylight to penetrate inside the building while responding the architecture of the adjacent campus buildings. Additionally, a large clerestory is strategically located above a large lecture style collaborative stair located at the heart of the building.

The exterior form is simple and elegant. The building’s primary structure is steel framing with structural cross bracing which will be visible from the exterior of the building. The roof deck and soffit extend out from the face of the building to provide a covered overhang protecting the façade from excessive solar heat gain during intense summer solar angles and provides a covered and protected exterior area around the footprint of the building.
