New Life Church

ROLE: ARCHITECT

CLIENT: NEW LIFE CHURCH

New Life Church of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida recently revealed MBL’s conceptual vision of their future home located on a 68-acre swathe of undisturbed wetlands and forests along Peach Creek at the intersection of the Gulf Coast and the Choctawhatchee Bay. The centerpiece of this sprawling campus, a multi-building complex of purposeful, inter-connected courtyards, breezeways and terraces, gently transitions visitors from the noise of the everyday world into a serene and elegant sanctuary featuring a 2,000 seat worship center, youth and children ministry classrooms and auditoria, multi-purpose event and lobby spaces, ample administrative office spaces, and intimate wedding chapel, all nestled among beautifully landscaped exterior gathering spaces.

Coastal Vernacular Meets the Holy Land

Operating in a fascinating tension between two distinct geographies, the sea and the lowland bay, the design concept borrows the formal language of the local Emerald coast vernacular – specifically the severe, white stucco New Urbanism of Alys and Rosemary Beach – and fuses it with the refined, contemporary Levantine modernism of Herzliya Pituach villa architecture (the previous home of church founder, Pastor Shawn Baker and his wife, Holly). The seemingly buoyant, white forms are anchored by the historical weight of imported Jerusalem Stone, bridging the geographical and temporal gap between today’s Gulf and ancient Galilean and Mediterranean Coasts. These vernaculars are inherently equipped to harmonize with the coastal climate, utilizing deep solar shades and brise soleil, cross-ventilation, and building materials resistant to the relentless degrading salinity.

A Village of Faith

To ensure the expansive complex maintains a sense of human scale and intimacy, the design organizes facilities into an interconnected "village of faith". Rather than relying on a single, monolithic structure, the campus is thoughtfully orchestrated in the shape of a simple cross. The main sanctuary anchors the foot of the layout, while the dedicated chapel and administrative wings form the arms, and the student ministry center serves as the head. This bold, organizing geometry naturally breaks the complex into welcoming, pedestrian-friendly zones, embedding the profound, unifying symbol into the very foundation of the site.

Ultimately, the New Life Church campus is designed to be much more than a collection of buildings; it is a meticulously crafted spiritual landscape. By blending the regional coastal vernacular with the timeless weight of Jerusalem stone, and by organizing the site through the calming geometries of traditional Christian symbolism, the architecture serves as a quiet but profound witness. It is a contemplative environment that invites the Emerald Coast community to step away from the chaos of the everyday and encounter peace, beauty, and shared purpose.
