Selected to design three Fire Stations as part of a 2019 Bond Package, MBL worked with Fayetteville Fire Department and City Administration, as well as an end-user led “Station Design Committee” to develop a modular floor plan which could be scaled up or down to fit various sites and/or adjusted based on the call volume of a particular area of town.
Another significant design factor was the tragic death of Officer Stephen Carr. Following his death, department administration and crews challenged the MBL design team to incorporate both active and passive security features that would safeguard station occupants, without looking like a medieval fortress.
Visitors to the stations are welcomed at a clearly defined entrance and small waiting area with an ADA bathroom; however, strategic access control prevents them from seeing into the station or traveling further without FFD personnel. The living quarters boast ample natural daylight which washes over the open kitchen, dining and day room areas. Durable, cleanable finishes were specified to withstand heavy use over time, minimizing maintenance and replacement costs. Accounting for the fact Station #2 would house the FFD hazmat operations, additional steps were taken to ensure adequate charging stations and storage for monitoring equipment.
Encouraging firefighter health and wellness, each station includes a robust fitness area, individual bedrooms and private outdoor patio. Keeping with NFPA guidelines, areas of high contamination, such as gear storage, are separated from living quarters and proper ventilation further reduces dangerous particulates. A mezzanine houses mechanical equipment and provides valuable storage space for large items such as air compressors and pallets of materials.
